Steady-state flows in a visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamic model of tokamak plasmas with inhomogeneous heating

نویسندگان

چکیده

The axisymmetric visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamic steady states allowing flows (i.e. non-vanishing velocity fields) are computed for a toroidal JET-like geometry. It is shown that spatially inhomogeneous heating of moderate magnitude leads to an increase typical speeds with respect the situation uniform temperature identical mean Hartmann numbers. A symmetry argument introduced capture breaking, induced by gradient, produces net plasma flow.

On steady poloidal and toroidal flows in tokamak plasmas

The effects of poloidal and toroidal flows on tokamak plasma equilibria are examined in the magnetohydrodynamic limit. “Transonic” poloidal flows of the order of the sound speed multiplied by the ratio of poloidal magnetic field to total field B /B can cause the normally elliptic Grad– Shafranov GS equation to become hyperbolic in part of the solution domain. It is pointed out that the range of...

Magnetohydrodynamic stability analyses of tokamak edge plasmas

s of publications 1-5: 1. An ELMy ASDEX Upgrade plasma equilibrium is reconstructed taking into accountthe bootstrap current. The peeling mode stability of the equilibrium is numericallyanalysed using the GATO [1] code, and it is found that the bootstrap current candrive the plasma peeling mode unstable. A high-n ballooning mode stability analysisof the equilibria revealed that,...

EX/P4-27 Development in DIII-D of High Beta Discharges Appropriate for Steady-state Tokamak Operation With Burning Plasmas

Ideally, tokamak power plants will operate in steady-state at high fusion gain. Recent work at DIII-D on the development of suitable high beta discharges with 100% of the plasma current generated noninductively (fNI = 1) is described. In a discharge with 1.5 < qmin <2, a scan of the discharge shape squareness was used to find the value that maximizes confinement and achievable N. A small bias o...

Nonlinear coupling of MHD waves in inhomogeneous steady flows

The nonlinear coupling of MHD waves in a cold (β = 0) compressible plasma with a smoothly inhomogeneous low-speed steady flow directed along the magnetic field is considered. The effect is similar to Alfvèn wave phase mixing in a static, inhomogeneous medium and leads to the production of steep transversal gradients in the plasma parameters, which increases dissipation. Transversal gradients in...
